Home Birth Midwifery Services
For most of history babies have been born at home. Even with the marvels of medical technology, most births go smoother with less intervention. Studies show that for low-risk pregnancies, planned home birth with a skilled attendant is at least as safe as a planned hospital birth. When the mother feels safe and supported, it disrupts the fear-tension-pain cycle, and the baby is less stressed. Birth is a natural occurrence. Having your baby at home allows you to relax during and after the birth, surround yourself with supportive people, move around, eat what you like, and set your own standards. It also requires you to educate yourself on the birth process and the many choices you face for yourself and your baby. Instead of being subjected to universal protocols and procedures, you will have the freedom and responsibility to make your own informed choices. Training for out-of-hospital midwives is rigorous and thorough. Although we care for families having low-risk pregnancies, we must be able to recognize when things fall outside of the range of normal and be prepared for unexpected emergencies. I am certified in CPR and Neonatal Resuscitation. I consult and collaborate with other health professionals and participate in regular peer review and continuing education. Prenatal appointments are usually held in the office. Our appointments are every four weeks early on, then biweekly and weekly toward the end of pregnancy and last around 45 minutes. We will arrange for a home visit in the 3rd trimester. Postpartum appointments are at 1 day, 3 days, 2 weeks, and 6 weeks after the birth. The first two postpartum visits are in your home. I care for women and babies throughout pregnancy and birth and for 6-8 weeks postpartum.
